The industry has spent the last several years obsessed with securing the cloud. Secure Access Service Edge (SASE), as popularized by Gartner1, has rightly earned its status as the darling of modern enterprise security, providing an elegant way to secure cloud-bound traffic and SaaS applications. But while the industry has been building security tunnels up to the cloud, a quiet crisis has been brewing on the ground floor.

Step into almost any branch office of any enterprise, and you won’t find elegant, modern architecture. Instead, you’ll find a technological junk drawer.

Beyond SASE: The Next Evolution for the Branch

Many industry analysts and enterprise IT buyers have been led to believe that the ultimate end-state for SD-WAN is simply to merge it with SASE in the cloud. Let’s call this vertical integration, where the SD-WAN edge platform is glued to security services up in the cloud, built for cloud-bound applications. While vertical integration with the cloud is a critical piece of the puzzle, treating it as the only requirement is a dangerous oversight. It completely ignores what is happening inside the four walls of your branch.

Your remote workers don't just access SaaS apps or the Internet. They connect to the network via local Wi-Fi, plug into wired LAN switches, and need to interact securely with local printers, servers, and storage. IoT devices such as intelligent lighting, IP security cameras, smart HVAC controls, and badge readers represent additional tenants requiring secure connectivity within the local branch office. Standard vertical SASE does nothing to secure this local "east-west" traffic, nor does it address the physical stack of hardware humming in your branch closet.

Today’s branch is a multi-vendor, disparate parallel-box nightmare. A typical branch includes:

  • An SD-WAN appliance from one vendor.
  • A local perimeter firewall from another.
  • LAN switches from a third.
  • Wi-Fi access points (APs) from yet another.

Each of these boxes operates in its own isolated silo, running different operating systems, maintained by different teams, and managed through different dashboards.

This multi-vendor box sprawl isn’t just an operational headache. It’s a massive, flashing target for cybercriminals. According to research from IDC2, organizations running fragmented, legacy network infrastructures face severe exposure to operational complexity and increased security risks. When you have four or five different point solutions from different vendors stacked on top of each other, configuring them becomes a manual, disjointed process. In fact, industry data3 shows that up to 95% of network changes are still performed manually, which inevitably leads to configuration mistakes, the single biggest driver of network downtime and security policy gaps.
